Falcone's Crossroads

Where This Meets That

Tuesday Tunage – Timbalada

“Tuesday Tunage” is a weekly spotlight for music I deem worthy of a spotlight. To make it worth all of our time, I’ll do my best to emphasize tunes you probably haven’t heard before that represent the art in all its glorious varieties.

Folks, it’s May!  It’s been a while since I went Latin with Tuesday Tunage, but today seems like a good opportunity to shake off the last dregs of winter with some heavy Afro-Brazilian swing.  Enter Timbalada, a percussion-driven group founded in the early 1990’s by Carlinhos Brown.

According to Wikipedia, Timbalada has “consisted of more than 100 percussionists and singers, called ‘timbaleiros’, the majority of them young kids from the Candeal neighborhood of Salvador, where Carlinhos was born.”

They are best known for rocking Carnival, as they do with this week’s spotlight song, “Margarida Perfumada”.  There is tremendous festive energy behind this recording that makes me totally wish I was there among the masses.  Hopefully some of that ambience spills over into your ears, as well.  Enjoy!
